Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that causes subtle differences in the brain at or around birth. It is hereditary but can also be caused by environmental factors such as brain damage, severe sickness for a child that may affect their brain development.

What happens when a child has ADHD?

The most common symptoms of ADHD are impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattentiveness and less focus on one thing. Most kids are inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive at times. But for a diagnosis of ADHD, these symptoms must interfere significantly in multiple places, such as at school and at home.

Brain function of ADHD

ADHD affects the executive function of the brain therefore have difficulties to self-regulate. The symptoms may change over time, with hyperactivity and impulsivity being more pronounced in young children. Many children will outgrow their symptoms but others do not, so ADHD can affect a person into adulthood.

Support your child

Patience is the key, support your child in managing the condition. Medication, behaviour therapy, coaching and other methods can be used to better manage the condition.
